Wood pellets are mass produced for the biomass market through a process whereby the sawdust is passed through a pellet dye at high temperature and pressure. The act of compression and the high temperature causes the lignin within the biomass to melt, gluing the particles together, which then re-form as a solid pellet after cooling. Woodpellets are thus, in effect, presterilised and you need only add water to hydrate before inocultaion. They are also easy to obtain and store.
